I initially discovered git annex looking for a way to preserve my audio recordings. It's just a perfect match, because a non-destructive audio editor will save recordings as big, bulky data blobs (WAV or AIFF), but all the editing data as tiny text files, which benefit greatly from keeping them in git.
The files go onto my home file server after editing, which pushes them to Amazon Glacier. It solves so many headaches at once for this setup it's staggering.
